Training Tips For Showing Your Dog

Showing off your canine at dog shows requires a lot of commitment. It's not like you can just take the dog for the show and expect it to perform well. Training for shows is different from general training as there are various other factors to consider. A lot of the training will depend on the dog's temperament as well. If your dog is uncomfortable in the presence of other dogs, you will have to train him to overcome his fear first and so on. Here are a few tips that can help you train the animal for shows and help you win those coveted ribbons
Train your dog to use a crate as his bed. This is important as dogs need the familiarity of their own beds for sleeping. The dog can get extremely uneasy while traveling or staying in hotels. Crates can be taken anywhere you go and make the dog comfortable.
Train the dog to potty on the leash. Always pick up after your dog, so carry plastic bag with you.
It is necessary to make your dog comfortable while travelling. A restless dog can cost you valuable points or even disqualify you.
Carry a lot of treats that our dog loves. Make sure to 'tip' him constantly for his good behavior.
There are a lot of dogs and people at the shows. Your dog has to be able to adjust to this fact. Make sure he has a lot of exposure to other dogs and people before you bring him to the show.
Sensitize your dog to other people touching him. You don't want your dog to nip the judge when he touches him. Ask your friends at home to pet him, take him for walks and so on, just to get him used to others handling him.
Some shows have agility tests that each dog has to pass. Familiarize yourself and your dog with this. Make sure both of have enough training around the course. It would be a good idea to recreate the course at your home or local park so that both of you are well versed with the rules.
Grooming is extremely important for show dogs. A bath, haircut, and brushing are must before the show. The grooming depends on the breed you are showcasing. Poodles, shitzus, and long haired dogs need a lot of grooming than short haired ones like hounds or Rottweilers.
Make sure to carry all your vaccination records with you.

Besides these tips for your dog, you should also keep a few points in mind as you are showcasing the dog. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Check out the venue or things like the show ring, winners circle, agility course, restrooms, cafeteria etc as soon as you get there.

Many world-famous Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and published Dog Care Experts universally agree any dog that eats commercial dog food is at a much higher risk of dying prematurely and by the time symptoms are noticeable, it's often too late to prevent an agonizing death except by lethal injection.
